The Quebec SNJM’s support the "Portée pédagogique" Series

Within the context of the Portée Pédagogique Series, the Orchestre Symphonique de Longueuil (OSDL) and the Commission Scolaire Marie-Victorin (CSMV) presents the 18th edition of the Concert du Printemps in collaboration with the Quebec Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, on Saturday, June 4 at 2:30 pm at the magnificent Maison Symphonique de Montréal.  

An impressive choir consisting of more than 400 students from twelve schools from the Commissions Scolaires Marie-Victorin (Écoles Adrien-Gamache, Carillon, des Petits-Explorateurs, Gentilly, Guillaume-Vignal, Jacques-Ouellette, Lajeunesse, Paul-Chagnon, de la Rose-des-Vents et Samuel-De Champlain), from Grandes-Seigneuries (École De la Petite-Gare) and from des Patriotes (Éécole Antoine-Girouard), this concert makes it possible for the students to explore a varied repertoire touching upon different musical styles and different eras, but also to live a unique experience while sharing the stage with the musicians of the OSDL under the direction of Maestro Marc David. Moreover, the public will have the pleasure of hearing the versatile trumpeter Frédéric Demers in the first part of the concert.

The Portée Pédagogique Series, created in 1999 in collaboration with the CSMV and offered to all school boards in the larger South Shore, pursues its twofold objective: to introduce young people to the treasury of classical music and, on the other hand, to contribute to keeping students in school. To date, more than 100 000 students in the Montérégie region have benefited from this initiative. 

Frédéric Demers

Recognized by his peers as "one of Canada's best trumpeters and cornet players" (International Trumpet Guild, USA), Frédéric Demers has performed as a soloist in various musical ensembles. Among his accomplishments are four creations of works as well as his solo CD Carnaval et Concertos (2008) for a soloist playing several trumpets and Large Ensemble. Chamber music is a passion for Frederic Demers, who is also a founding member of different musical groups with a broad range of styles and using a wide variety of instruments. As a freelancer, Frédéric Demers has also played in many Québec symphony orchestras, including the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and the Orchestre Métropolitain, and has participated in a six-concert tour in Germany with the baroque ensemble The Netherlands Bach Society.

In 2007, Frédéric Demers coproduced, with Jeunesses Musicales du Canada, the Young Audience Concert Fred Piston's 7 trumpets with which he made nearly 500 solo performances throughout Canada reaching out to more than 65,000 young people. Music, an important value for the SNJM’s of Quebec

The encouragement and support for learning the music of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) is not new. This Quebec religious congregation, initially dedicated to the education of girls in the countryside, integrated music education in the early years of its foundation in Longueuil. The role of the SNJM’s has increased throughout the years leading them to found the École Supérieure de Musique d'Outremont, which later became the Vincent-d'Indy School of Music. Today, with the collaboration of associates, consecrated laypersons and other co-workers, the SNJM Sisters of Quebec continue their commitment to music, education and social justice.

The Orchestre Symphonique de Longueuil “in numbers” throughout its 30 years 

In short:  Marc David, a dynamic leader, approachable and talented with the OSDL for 20 years, 52 professional musicians living out their passion, an artistic pillar in the Longueuil area, more than 2,000 works interpreted by the orchestra, more than 500 guest artists, an average of 600 subscribers to the Grand Concert Series and 135 to the smaller Concert Series over the years, 100,000 students representing many schools’ participation in activities within the framework of the “Portée Pedagogique Series” and dozens of young musicians who are given the opportunity to perform with the Orchestra.

The OSDL is 30 years of pure joy, nearly 600 concerts, and 575 000 loyal spectators. Finally, there is also a committed and motivated team, hundreds of volunteers working behind the scenes, not forgetting the support of many financial partners vital to the maintenance and growth of the OSDL.

The Orchestre Symphonique de Longueuil was established in 1986 and has 52 professional musicians. Its mission is to produce innovative musical events that make symphonic music available to everyone throughout the Montérégie region.

The Commission scolaire Marie-Victorin (CSMV) offers educational services to the population of the cities of Brossard, Saint-Lambert and Longueuil (boroughs of Greenfield Park, Saint-Hubert and Vieux-Longueuil). It educates more than 34,000 students annually, making it one of the largest school boards in Quebec. In general, immigrants account for 49.1% of the school population and come from 80 countries. More than 29% of students do not have French as their mother tongue. Moreover, the CSMV, with its 4,500 regular employees, ranks among the largest employers on the South Shore.
