An "informative" apple tasting at Résidence Marie-Rose-Durocher!

Fall has arrived and it’s apple season… The Sisters at Résidence Marie-Rose-Durocher experienced the "week of the apple" in an original way. Each day, the creative cooks prepared apple-based meals. To finish the week in style, what could be better than sampling them and having a mini-conference on the topic?

With great pleasure, our chef Luc Tremblay shared his knowledge about this universally-known fruit with the Sisters during collation time,

The variety of shape, color and taste

How many varieties of apples are there in the world? How many can we find in Quebec? Where can we find 18 different types of apples in Montreal?  When was the first time that apples appeared on Mount Royal?*

Following this variety of information, presented in a humorous and light-hearted way, what better way could there be to discover the main kinds of apples than by tasting them …

Although all could recognize the McIntosh, the Sisters who were there learned to distinguish the Lobo, the Cortland, the Honey crisp, the Melba and also discovered their characteristics: one is sweet, another does not turn black when exposed to air, and still another loses its shape when it is cooked.

From the looks on the faces of the participants, the time for tasting was greatly appreciated. We tasted raw apples, cooked apples, apples cut into quarters, apple sauce, a delicious apple caramel… Simply by listing them, we begin to salivate again!

Bravo to the chef who knew how to captivate the audience and help them discover the apple from a fresh perspective.

*And you? Could you have responded to the questions posed during this conference-tasting?

Here are the answers:

• 7500 kinds of apples in the world
• 600 kinds in Quebec
• 18 kinds of apples can be found at Jean-Talon Market
• The apple appeared on Mount Royal for the first time in 1670
