As part of the "Portée pédagogique" Series, the Orchestre symphonique de Longueuil presents its Spring Concert

As part of the "Portée pédagogique" Series, the 'Orchestre symphonique de Longueuil' (OSDL) and the Commission scolaire Marie-Victorin (CSMV) present the 19th edition of the Spring Concert in collaboration with the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary of Quebec, on Sunday, June 4, at 2:30 pm at Théâtre Maisonneuve at Place des Arts in Montreal.

An impressive choir of over 300 students from ten schools of the Commission scolaire Marie-Victorin (Adrien-Gamache, Rose-des-Vents, Gentilly, des Petit-Explorateurs, Jacques-Ouellette, Lajeunesse, Paul-Chagnon and Rabeau), Commission Scolaire des Grandes-Seigneuries (École de la Petite-Gare), the Patriotes (Antoine-Girouard school), and more than 170 students from choir and the youth orchestra from École secondaire Saint-Edmond, will appear with the OSDL. This concert especially enables students to explore a varied repertoire from different styles of music and from different eras, as well as to gain an exceptional experience as they share the stage with professional musicians from the OSDL under the direction of Maestro Marc David. In addition, the audience will have the pleasure of hearing the young trumpeter José-Gabriel Londono-Flores.

The “Portée Pédagogique” Series, created in 1999 in collaboration with the CSMV (Commission scolaire Marie-Victorin), and offered to all school boards in the larger South Shore, pursues its twofold objective which, on one hand, is to introduce young people to the treasury of classical music and, on the other hand, to contribute to keeping students in school. To date, more than 100 000 students have benefited from this initiative.

The Commission scolaire Marie-Victorin

The CSMV offers educational services to the population of the cities of Brossard, Saint-Lambert and Longueuil (boroughs of Greenfield Park, Saint-Hubert and Vieux-Longueuil). It educates more than 34,000 students annually, making it one of the largest school boards in Quebec. Overall, the immigrant clientele represents 53.1% of the school population originating from 80 countries. More than 29% of students do not have French as their mother tongue. In addition, with its 4,500 regular employees, CSMV ranks among the largest employers in the South Shore.

Music, a core value for Quebec SNJMs

The Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary’s (SNJM) encouragement and support for learning music is not new. As the first Canadian Teaching Congregation of Women Religious, initially dedicated to the education of girls in the countryside, they integrated the teaching of music in the early years of its founding in Longueuil. The SNJM’s role has intensified over the years through the establishment of the École Supérieure de Musique in Outremont, which later became the Vincent-d'Indy School of Music. Today, with the collaboration of associates, consecrated lay persons and volunteers, the SNJM Sisters of Quebec continue their commitment in music, education and social justice.
