SNJMs participating in a presentation of “Archives à voix haute” (Archives Read Aloud) - yesterday's heritage lives on today

The archives of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) will be featured during two “Archives à voix haute” ("Archives Read Aloud") sessions, presented on Saturday, October 14, at 11:30 am and at 2:00 pm at the Pointe-à-Callière Museum (registration required).

This conference presenting the public reading of archival documents is the result of the collaboration of a dozen archive departments from Religious Congregations. Under the theme of L’héritage d’hier vivant aujourd’hui (Yesterday's heritage lives on today), the Congregations wanted to share their history and their work in Montréal, as part of the city's 375th anniversary program.

For the occasion, the team from the SNJM Central Archives Department selected excerpts from a series of articles published in the local newspaper Les Nouvelles de l'Est. Reference is made to history lessons, prepared by the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve History Workshop with the collaboration of Professors Micheline Collin, S.N.J.M. and Doris Desaulniers, from the École Saint-Nom-de-Jésus.

These archival documents highlight a part of the history of this teaching Congregation of Women Religious founded by a Canadian woman. In addition they highlight the presence of SNJM Sisters teaching in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve-Mercier district, where they have worked since 1860, and their collaborative approach with this milieu. The documents also reflect a method of teaching adapted to the realities experienced by the students.
