A New SNJM

Zacchaeus, come down quickly…

A moving paraphrase of this text from the Gospel of Luke, encaptures the vibrant witness of the “YES” proclaimed by Helen Harvey as she made her temporary commitment as an SNJM Sister, February 26, 2011, in her home town of Alma, in the Lac St-Jean region of Quebec.

The Church was filled to capacity with family members, Sisters and volunteers from the Mission Sector, two Sisters from the Quebec SNJM Province who are former missionaries in Haiti. Everyone joined in the celebration.  Symbols from Peru, Haiti, Brazil and Lesotho were creatively integrated into the Eucharistic celebration.

Under Mother Marie-Rose’s loving gaze the song “Je mets ma confiance” was sung as a response to the profession of vows. Sisters Lise Brosseau and Gabrielle Brunet prayed the ‘Our Father’ in Creole.

Hélène Harvey shares

Since her profession day, Hélène has wanted to share her great joy.  Several local communities invited her: Albani, Sainte-Émélie, Val Morin, Winnipeg . . .

This evening, May 16th, the Congregational House in Longueuil welcomed this woman who is full of energy and determination, and filled with an apostolic fervour.  Who else could stir up the glowing embers under the ashes?

Like her friend Zacchaeus, Hélène heard the call to come down from her tree.  She explains: descend from your hospital, heeding the call to “Come follow me” in order to continue taking care…with audacity.

A period of time spent in Haiti “bowled her over” to the point that she wanted to return as soon as possible. It is with great hope in the future that this newly professed Sister shared the profound moments of her profession ceremony with us.  The Magnificat at this time of year reminds us of the many years of religious profession being celebrated by our jubilarians.
