Action for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

This campaign got underway in Quebec on November 25th, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and lasts until December 6th, National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This date commemorates the anniversary of the murders, in 1989, of 14 women at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal.

Throughout Quebec, many groups, in various ways, will challenge our society to denounce all that is impeding the elimination of this violence.

A short video, in French, was produced by the *Fédération des femmes du Québec (FFQ), and can be seen on this site:

http://www.ffq.qc.ca/2011/11/12-jours-d-action/. It emphasizes the different factors which, still in 2011, perpetuate violence against women. It also emphasizes our individual and collective responsibility to make this violence stop.

The  Campaign which consists of 12 days of action will end with a public gathering on December 6th, in front of the "Palais de justice de Montréal", at 12:00 noon, so as to commemorate the victims of the "Polytechnique Massacre", to denounce violence against women, and above all, to recommend solutions.

Madame Louise Riendeau ended by saying: “On this occasion, we will state loudly and clearly that as long as there is violence against women, equality is impossible!”

* The Fédération des femmes du Québec (FFQ) is a feminist organization binding individuals and groups in a common goal to "promote and defend the interests and the rights of women and to fight against all forms of violence, discrimination, marginalization and exclusion towards women in Quebec".
