Legal Formation

From June 17 – 21, 2013, Sisters Lorraine Mongeon and Beverley Wattling were back at school at the University of St. Paul in Ottawa. They attended the “Legal Education for Leadership of Religious Institutes” program.

This three-year program is sponsored by: the University of St. Paul (in particular the Faculty of Canon Law), the CRC (Canadian Religious Conference), ATTIR (Association des trésorières et trésoriers des instituts religieux) and ATRI (Association of Treasurers of Religious Institutes). Sr. Lorraine St-Hilaire, SNJM, was a member of the planning committee as part of her work at the CRC.

Approximately 130 people attended, including: women and men, Francophones and Anglophones, apostolic and contemplative religious, Canadians and people from as far away as Ireland, and lay staff of various congregations, especially staff working in finance departments

Missioning Ceremony in chapel

This year’s formation focused on the following points: religious life, community life and its different expressions, vows, wills, rights and obligations of individuals, dismissals and voluntary departures, Associates, and lawsuits.

Everyone profited from the quality presentations which were given separately in French and in English. Two of the presenters are well known to the SNJM community. Sr. Marjory Gallagher, SC, was one of the animators of the 33rd SNJM General Chapter in 2011 and Fr. Frank Morrisey, OMI, has often offered sessions and acted as a consultant for the SNJM community.

Everyone also enjoyed the delicious banquet on Thursday evening, at which those finishing the three-year program were presented with certificates.

Following the last session on Friday morning, the week concluded  with a bilingual missioning ceremony at which each participant was missioned to continue to bring light, life, and hope to our world.
