For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, was not 'Yes' and 'No'; but in him it is always 'Yes'.  For in him every one of God’s promises is a ‘Yes.'“  2 Cor, 1, 19-20. 

December 20, 2010, Sister Marthe Cormier,
in religion M.-Jeanne-Lucie,
went home to God.

She was 95 years old and had been professed for 70 years.
Born in Contrecoeur, Québec, she was the 2nd of 8 children
of Jean-Félix Cormier and M.-Anne-Lucie Gravel.

Marthe grew up on the family ancestral farm, the property of the family since the deportation of the Acadians. “The cross on the road facing the house taught us very early to look up towards heaven.”  After her elementary school with the SNJM’s in Contrecoeur and then her 4th year of high school at the convent in Longueuil, Marthe entered the Postulate of the Sisters who had been her teachers.  “We might say that it was from the time of my entrance into the Congregation of the Children of Mary that I felt the desire to become a religious.”

When her father became sick; she saw this as an indication that she should stay at home for the time being. She would enter three years later.

At the age of 25, Sister Jeanne-Lucie began her career in teaching, first at the primary level, then in high school in our different boarding schools and colleges: Collège Jésus-Marie for 11 years as a teacher of French, Latin and Greek, and finally at Collège Durocher for 16 years where she became Directress of Studies before being named registrar and superior at the Secondary School in Saint Lambert.

While teaching, Sister continued her studies: Diploma in education, Arts degree in the Classics, Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies. From her wonderful career as an educator, former students and colleagues remember her for her justice and level-headedness, her welcoming smile and marked interest in each one, her ability to understand...

Open to world events and to the life of this great Congregation near or far, Sister Marthe took an interest in research, in striving through trial and error, in hardships, in progress, in initiatives...

Sister Marthe was 72 years old when she was named animator at the infirmary for our sick sisters. A woman of discretion, prayer, reflection and compassion, she deeply lived her experience of God.  Her faith and intuition helped her to prepare for a great departure. At the age of 88, she was welcomed into the infirmary where, according to her ability, she continued to visit her companions who were even sicker than she was. Thus she continued her contemplation of the Trinity which she had begun many years before. At the age of 95, “her long life appeared as a straight path much like the woman herself!”
